Diya Siddique is a quite popular name in archery after the final of Archery World Cup. After Ruman Shana, Diya is also going to compete in Tokyo Olympics although she was eliminated from the recurve female event. The general secretary of the archery federation confirmed the information.
Diya was one of the lucky recipients. In Paris, the selection round was organized for the last time. The Bangladeshi archers could take place directly in the Olympics if they were among the best three. But Diya got eliminated from the Final Qualifiers in Paris after losing to Ana Umer of Slovenia in a tie-breaker. So The news of her getting a wildcard came on the same day when she lost her last chance to directly qualify for the mega event with a defeat in the Final Qualifiers for the Games in Paris. The International Olympics Committee decided to award wildcards to four archers due to their promising performances.
Diya Siddique is a Bangladeshi archer. On 23 May 2021, she along with Ruman Shana claimed silver medal in the recurve mixed team event during the 2021 Archery World Cup where Bangladesh emerged as runners-up to Netherlands in the final. Despite losing the final 5-1, it was the best performance by Bangladesh at an Archery World Championship. It also marked the first instance where Bangladesh managed to reach the final in an event of the Archery World Cup. That was Bangladesh’s first silver medal on the world stage in archery and Bangladesh Archery Federation’s general secretary Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapal informed that her performance in that competition prompted World Archery to nominate her name for the Wildcard to the IOC. Previously Diya and Shana earned direct qualification for the Tokyo Olympics in 2019. Diya is overall the sixth athlete from Bangladesh set to take part in the showcase event, scheduled to take place from July to August.
